President Bola Tinubu has submitted a letter to the Senate, urging the confirmation of five people appointed as directors of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) board, News About Nigeria reports.

The names presented by the President for confirmation are Robert Agbide, Ado Wanga, Muritala Sagaley, Urom Eke, and Olayinka Aliyu.

The letter, addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, was read during the Senate plenary on Tuesday.

Tinubu noted that the nominations comply with the provisions of Section 6, subsection 1b, and Section 10, subsections 1 and 2 of the CBN Establishment Act, 2007.

In the letter, President Tinubu stated, “I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of the under-listed five persons as Directors of the Board of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Robert Agbide, Ado Wanga, Muritala Sagaley, Urom Eke and Olayinka Aliyu.

“While hoping that the request will receive the expeditious consideration of the Senate, please accept the distinguished Senate President, the assurance of my highest regards.”

The move comes after the CBN dissolved the boards and managements of Union Bank of Nigeria, Keystone Bank, and Polaris Bank in January 2024, citing alleged corporate governance infractions and non-compliance with regulatory requirements.

The President had appointed Jim Obazee, CEO of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, as a special investigator to probe the CBN in July 2023.

The investigation aimed to assess the activities of the CBN and related government business entities, with weekly briefings on the progress.

The confirmation of the newly appointed directors is expected to undergo the Senate’s screening process in line with constitutional provisions.
