Economic Hardship: Nigerian Master Bakers, Caterers Threaten Nationwide Strike

Due to the current economic hardship that Nigerians are going through and the continuous increase in prices of items in the market, the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria has said it will embark on a nationwide strike on February 27, 2024, News About Nigeria reports.

In a statement by the association’s national president, Alhaji Mansur Umar, which was released on Tuesday, it was revealed that another reason why they would withdraw their service nationwide from February 27 is because of the failure of the federal government to implement the agreement it entered into with the association in 2020.

According to the statement, the federal government had promised post-COVID-19 support programmes for small and medium enterprises for bakers in 2020.

The association, while lamenting the huge taxes members get to pay, called for the suspension of all forms of taxation on the bakery industry for now at the federal, state, and local government levels.

Umar also tasked the federal government with fulfilling all the financial support and palliative promises they have made to bakers since 2020.

Speaking further, the National President of the association decried the continuous increase in the prices of baking materials such as flour, sugar, yeast, vegetable oil, petrol, and diesel following the subsidy removal.

“The Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria has critically accessed the state of our business operation and consequently demands the liberalisation of flour and sugar importation, reduction or total removal of import duties on major baking materials such as flour, sugar, butter, yeast etc,” the statement added.
