AFCON: Tinubu Confers MON National Honour On Super Eagles

Despite losing the finals of the just concluded African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday awarded the Super Eagles team the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) national honour for their performance.

News About Nigeria reported that the title was conferred on them by President Tinubu on Tuesday when he hosted them at the Council Chambers of the State House.

Aside from the titles conferred on the players, President Tinubu also tasked the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, with giving each team member a plot of land and a flat in Abuja.

The president, who expressed his gratitude to the team for how impressively they played from the beginning to the end of the AFCON competition, noted that he is proud of them.

President Tinubu, who reiterated his joy even though the Nigerian national team didn’t bring the cup back home, charged them to not give up but to put their heads up high as there are more games to play and win in the future.

While encouraging the Eagles to continue to represent Nigeria and put the nation in the spotlight, Tinubu noted that his administration is committed to the growth of football and other sports in Nigeria.

The Nigerian team arrived in Nigeria yesterday night after coming in second in the AFCON tournament, which ended on Sunday night.

During the meeting with the president, all members of the Super Eagles team were present, including Alex Iwobi, who had suffered cyberattacks over the loss to Ivory Coast.

Recall that the Super Eagles, in a fierce battle, lost 2-1 to the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire, who were the hosts and eventual winners of the tournament.
