Cyril Ndifon: Suspended UNICAL Dean Claims ICPC Lawyer Unqualified

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted bail to the suspended Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Calabar, Prof. Cyril Ndifon, and his lawyer, Sunny Anyanwu, News About Nigeria reports.

The two are currently facing trial on amended charges, including alleged sexual harassment and an attempt to pervert the course of justice.

Prof. Ndifon was granted bail in the sum of N250 million with two sureties, each owning properties within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with a minimum valuation of N150 million.

He and his sureties are also required to submit their bank statements, and the professor must surrender his international passport to the court.

Anyanwu, the lawyer arraigned alongside Ndifon, was granted bail of N50 million with two sureties who must submit their bank statements.

Both defendants are expected to file an undertaking not to interfere with the case, express readiness to attend trial, and commit not to cause any delays.

The court had initially remanded Prof. Ndifon on January 8 when he was first arraigned.

Subsequently, on January 10, he was granted temporary bail to undergo eye surgery.

Anyanwu was joined in the amended charge on January 22, following allegations that he threatened the star witness of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) during the trial.

The trial judge, Justice James Omotoso, had previously declined to hear their bail applications, citing the need to protect the ICPC’s star witness.

Ruling on their bail application on Friday, Justice Omotoso adjourned the matter till Monday for the continuation of the hearing.
