The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has called on the Federal Government (FG) to quickly address the issue of the degenerating economy in the country before it becomes worse, News About Nigeria reports.
The Northern Elders Director of Publicity and Advocacy/Spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, made this call to the federal government in a statement.
Suleiman mentioned that the cost of living has been steadily increasing, particularly in terms of food prices, leading to widespread hunger and malnourishment.
According to him, the situation in the country has increased malnutrition, particularly among children, as families are forced to prioritise their limited resources.
He noted that the impact of inflation extends beyond food prices, maintaining that small businesses are struggling to survive as the cost of raw materials and transportation continues to rise.
“The consequences of this unchecked rise in inflation are devastating for ordinary Nigerians. Families are finding it increasingly difficult to afford basic necessities as the prices of essential commodities such as rice, beans, and cooking oil continue to skyrocket,” he said.
He further stated that the rate of unemployment has continued to soar as companies are unable to sustain their operations amidst mounting expenses, and he added that the cycle of inflation and economic decline is pushing our nation further into poverty and despair.
He went on to propose certain measures that can be taken by the government to bring relief to Nigerians.
He noted that the government must acknowledge the suffering of its citizens and implement effective policies to alleviate the burden of inflation, adding that urgent measures must be taken by the government to address this crisis before it plunges the nation into greater conflict and chaos.
