The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has cautioned its officers on the usage of their uniforms when on duty, News About Nigeria reports.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, made this known in a post on his X handle on Monday while reacting to a video in which four policemen in mufti stopped a driver on the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
Recall that a video went viral on social media last week where men on mufti who claimed to be officers stopped a car owner, asking for his tinted permit.
The driver had, however, refused to oblige them after he asked for their identities, which they refused to provide. The man argued that there was nothing to indicate they were policemen.
Reacting to the video, Adejobi said that the policemen have been traced to Zone 2 and identified.
He added that the Assistant Inspector General, AIG Zone 2 Lagos, is investigating the incident and that the PPRO Zone 2 will speak concerning the incident as soon as possible.
He maintained that the NPF had earlier on ordered that officers on stop-and-search duties or routine patrol must be in uniform, properly dressed, and with their names attached for easy identification, adding that it is not ideal for officers to carry out a stop-and-search wearing mufti.
“The audacity to misbehave or carry out unprofessional conduct comes when you know your identity is hidden and unknown. I still reiterate that policemen on stop-and-search and routine patrol must be in uniform. That is the standard in the police,” he said.
