Some retired military generals have urged the Federal Government to give capital punishment to sponsors of those terrorising the country when caught, News About Nigeria reports.
The retired generals expressed their disappointment in the fact that although the Federal Government knows and has caught some of these sponsors, they have refused to prosecute or punish them.
The generals, who spoke to Vanguard on condition of anonymity, maintained that this attitude of the government has led to a rise in the level of insecurity in the country, noting that these bandits have a field day, kidnapping and killing people because they know they have the backing of powerful people in the country.
One of them noted that the elites in the country get away with a lot of things, including stealing billions, that are meant for socioeconomic development.
He, however, noted that the strategy is to de-oxygenate them by providing good governance.
He added that the billions voted for security operations are largely channelled into grandiose buildings as a showoff rather than investing in up-to-date surveillance equipment and human intelligence.
He further condemned the tactics of the government in deploying professional military officers to business ventures undertaken by the politicians, stating that it is a major distraction and has been for years, as that is not their major function.
He also stated that the reason why it seems like the terrorists keep multiplying despite the efforts of the military to neutralising them is that there are millions recruited by their sponsors.
“You can’t expect poverty-stricken people who see the billions of naira looted and not take to criminality,” he said.
