Cyril Ndifon: Suspended UNICAL Dean Claims ICPC Lawyer Unqualified

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Cyril Ndifon, the suspended Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), and his lawyer, Sunny Anyanwu, in Kuje Correctional Centre, News About Nigeria reports.

The decision was made during their re-arraignment on an amended four-count charge related to alleged sexual harassment and an attempt to pervert the course of justice.

Justice James Omotosho issued the remand order, pending the hearing of their bail application.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is the complainant in the case, and Mr. Ndifon and Mr. Anyanwu are the 1st and 2nd defendants, respectively.

The charges against Ndifon include alleged sexual harassment of a student, and Anyanwu is accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The charges are in violation of Section 24 of the Cybercrime (Prohibition & Prevention) Act 2015.

In count one, Ndifon was alleged to have, between May and September 2023 while being employed by UNICAL as Dean of Faculty of Law, caused one Miss TKJ (not real name), a diploma student of the university, to send pornographic, indecent and obscene photographs of herself to him through his mobile telephone number: 08037066222 vide WhatsApp charts.

Additionally, Anyanwu is alleged to have called one of the prosecution witnesses on her mobile phone during the pendency of the charges against Ndifon.

He purportedly threatened her not to cooperate with the ICPC investigation, an act considered an attempt to pervert the course of justice under Section 182 of the Penal Code Cap. 532 Laws of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, 2006.

It is worth noting that Ndifon was previously granted temporary bail on January 10 to undergo glaucoma surgery.
