In response to the Supreme Court’s decision upholding the elections of opposition party governors, former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has extended his congratulations to the affirmed governors.
News About Nigeria reported that the apex court on Friday affirmed the victories of Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Caleb Muftwang (Plateau), and Abba Yusuff (Kano).
In a statement released by Atiku’s media office on Friday, the former vice president not only congratulated the governors but also declared his readiness to lead a coalition of opposition political parties against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Atiku, who recently proposed a merger of all opposition political parties, said there is a need for unity in the face of what he sees as increasing dictatorship by the APC.
“We have all seen how the APC is increasingly turning Nigeria into a dictatorship of one party. If we don’t come together to challenge what the ruling party is trying to create, our democracy will suffer for it, and the consequences of it will affect the generations yet unborn,” Atiku said.
Reacting to the Supreme Court’s decisions in favour of PDP and New Nigeria Peoples Party governors, Atiku described the judgements as a victory for democracy.
He congratulated the governors of Bauchi, Plateau, Akwa Ibom, and Zamfara states and commended the court for its role in upholding justice.
Atiku urged the PDP governors to view the victories as opportunities to consolidate and expand the scope of good governance in their respective states.
He said he is confident that the PDP can now focus on its role as the major opposition party in the country since the election phase is done.
The statement read, “I am as prepared as ever to lead the charge, alongside all our leaders and governors, for the good of our country.
“Where justice is seen to have been substantially rendered, we, as patriots and citizens, will always applaud. There is a guaranteed continuation of the standards of good governance which the PDP has brought to the respective states.”
