The late Nigerian pastor, Temitope Joshua, also known as TB Joshua, has been accused of sexual assault, physical abuse, faked miracles, and trauma by more than 25 people, according to a BBC report published on Monday.
Joshua, who founded the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), was one of Africa’s most influential religious leaders and wealthiest pastors, News About Nigeria reports.
The BBC conducted a two-year investigation in collaboration with Open Democracy, involving over 15 journalists across three continents.
The investigation delved into allegations of sexual assault, physical abuse, solitary confinement, and fake miracles, among other claims.
Former insiders estimated that Joshua made tens of millions of dollars through various revenue streams, including pilgrims, fundraising, video sales, and stadium appearances abroad.
Eyewitnesses and alleged victims from the UK, Nigeria, Ghana, the US, South Africa, and Germany provided detailed accounts of their experiences inside Joshua’s compound.
The testimonies suggested that Joshua had been abusing and raping young women from around the world multiple times a week for nearly two decades.
One victim, a 21-year-old female Briton named Rae, shared her experience.
According to her, she joined Joshua’s compound with the hope that he could ‘cure’ her homosexuality.
Instead, she faced psychological trauma for two years, attempting suicide five times.
The investigation revealed that Joshua’s miracles were often staged, and those ‘cured’ had sometimes been paid or drugged to perform or exaggerate their symptoms.
The disciples, who served Joshua’s every need without pay, spoke of routine sleep deprivation and long working hours.
The report also mentioned that the disciples, including victims of abuse, were made to work tirelessly, running various aspects of the megachurch without compensation.
The church, still operational, is now led by Joshua’s widow, Evelyn.
While SCOAN did not respond to the allegations presented during the investigation, the church denied previous claims against Joshua.
