Alia To Reduce Suffering Of Benue Residents

The Supreme Court ruled on Monday in favour of Hyacinth Alia, affirming him as the governor of Benue State, News About Nigeria reports.

The five-man panel of justices, led by Justice John Okoro, also dismissed the appeal by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the Benue governorship election, Titus Uba.

Recall that Uba had approached the Supreme Court after the governorship election petition tribunal, and the court of appeal affirmed that Alia won the state’s governorship election in March 2023.

The court of appeal had also dismissed the petition of the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State, Titus Uba, challenging the victory of Governor Hyacinth Alia of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which was out of its jurisdiction.

Rev.Father Hyacinth Alia was declared the winner after the returning officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Faruk Kuta, announced that the APC candidate polled 473,933 votes to defeat his closest rival, Titus Uba who scored 223,914 votes.

Alia, a Catholic priest, was also given a certificate of return by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

In the same vein, the Supreme Court will also be deciding the fate of the governorship candidates of the PDP and APC in Ebonyi State today.

Both candidates are, however, holding their breaths as they await the outcome of their appeal to the Supreme Court.

Recall that the court of appeal in Lagos, in the case of Ebonyi state, affirmed the election of Francis Nwifuru as the duly elected governor of Ebonyi State.
