The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has warned Nigerians against the attitude of voter apathy as the 2024 governorship elections draw closer, News About Nigeria reports.
The National Chairman of SDP, Malam Shehu Gabam, made this call while speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday, stating that it was unpatriotic for the people to have an attitude of apathy towards who leads them.
He noted that the attitude of boycotting elections must also be done away with, maintaining that boycotting elections is not a solution in a democratic system of government, which is exactly what Nigeria practices.
According to him, avoiding the system meant that Nigerians were doing more harm to the system, urging them to turn up during elections, cast their votes, and make sure their votes count.
He, therefore, called on the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to return to its constitutional role of sensitising and reorienting Nigerians on the need to vote and protect their votes during elections.
According to him, there is a need for people to understand their rights and privileges.
Malam Shehu noted that if people are properly reoriented so that they understand that it is their constitutional right to cast their votes and their votes to be counted, they will resist any attempt to boycott their votes.
“Once people start resisting an attempt to subvert their votes, there’s nothing anybody, including the executive, can do to subvert their will,” he said.
Speaking further, Gabam called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be bold in implementing provisions of the Electoral Laws and the Constitution in the conduct of future elections.
