The Nigeria Population Commission (NPC) has announced that it has upgraded the mode it uses to register the birth of children in the country, News About Nigeria reports.
The head of NPC’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics in Gombe State, Mr. Adedeji Adeniyi, disclosed this on Friday, stating that the process has helped the Commission be more productive.
He noted that the commission was able to transition from the analog mode of birth registration to the digital platform while partnering with UNICEF.
According to him, the transition from analog to electronic mode has made the process of birth registration a seamless one, adding that critical stakeholders in the state have also collaborated with the commission to encourage birth registration.
He, therefore, urged residents who were yet to register the births of their wards to do so, maintaining that the data obtained from birth registration was vital for the government’s planning and intervention.
Adeniyi added that birth registration and certification are important to give children identity and nationality, as well as access to social amenities.
He further noted that between January and November 2023, the commission registered 424,302 births in Gombe.
Adeniyi added that the registrations done in more than 100 registration centres in the state covered children aged between 0 and 17 years.
He, however, lamented the low turn-up in the registration of death in the state, stating that the majority of the people do not register the death of their loved ones and only do that when certain benefits require them to submit the certificate.
