Local Government Election: Gombe Suspends Monthly Exercise

The Gombe State Government has opted to suspend its monthly sanitation exercise to facilitate smooth local government elections scheduled to be held on April 27.

News About Nigeria reported that the Gombe state government introduced the compulsory monthly sanitation exercise earlier in April as part of efforts to maintain a clean and sustainable environment for residents.

Inuwa Yahaya, governor of Gombe, approved the exercise to be observed every last Saturday of each month, beginning in April.

The state government said there will be restrictions on human and vehicular movement during the exercise.

However, in a statement on Friday, the Commissioner for Water, Environment, and Forest Resources, Mohammed Fawu, said it is important to participate in civic duties, urging residents to focus on exercising their voting rights rather than waiting for the scheduled sanitation day.

With the suspension of the sanitation exercise for April 2024, residents are encouraged to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings and take advantage of the opportunity to participate in the forthcoming local government council polls on Saturday, April 27th.

“This is to inform the general public that the instituted monthly environmental sanitation exercise, slated for every last Saturday of the month, has been suspended for April 2024.

“This is the sequel to the scheduled 27th April 2024 local government Elections in Gombe State. It is believed that the suspension of the environmental sanitation exercise for this month will pave the way for a smooth and hitch-free poll come Saturday,” he said.

Furthermore, the Executive Secretary of the Gombe State Environmental Protection Agency, Auwal Baba-Jada, said plans are underway to bolster waste management infrastructure by establishing 90 additional refuse collection points across various locations in the state.
