On Friday, Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State declared three days of mourning for the former Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu who passed away on December 27 after battling prostate cancer.

News About Nigeria reports that the former Ondo governor, until his death, was the Chairman of the Southern Governors Forum and South West Governors Forum.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Yinka Oyebode, the Ekiti Governor said that the three days of mourning was in honour of the late Akeredolu who, in his lifetime, worked for the good of Ondo State, the Southwest and Nigeria as a whole.

While declaring the three-day state mourning, Oyebanji ordered that all flags at public buildings across the state be flown half-mast for the three days of mourning which commenced on Friday (today).

Oyebanji had earlier, together with some South Governors, paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Ondo Governor at their Ibadan residence.

In a post shared on his official X account, the Ekiti state governor wrote, “I visited the family of the late Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu at his Jericho, Ibadan residence today, in company of my brother Governors Dapo Abiodun and Ademola Adeleke to offer my Akeredolu.”

Recall that the Ondo State Governor died on Wednesday after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer.

Akeredolu, who gave up the ghost while undergoing treatment in Germany, was a one-time President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

Following Akeredolu’s tragic demise, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who was the state’s acting governor was sworn in as the Governor of Ondo State.
