The Ondo State Government has officially confirmed the passing of the state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, News About Nigeria reports.
The announcement came several hours after reports of the governor’s death had circulated widely.
According to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs. Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, Governor Akeredolu succumbed to complications arising from protracted prostate cancer.
The statement, titled ‘It Is a Sad Day in Ondo State’, expressed the heavy heart with which the news was delivered.
“With a heavy heart, the Ondo State Government announces the passing of our beloved Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON. Mr. Governor peacefully departed from this world in the early hours of today, Wednesday, December 27, 2023.
“This tragedy has left behind a profound void in our hearts. Governor Akeredolu answered the eternal call while receiving medical treatment in Germany,” the statement read.
The family and the Ondo State Government expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his support during Governor Akeredolu’s illness.
A formal letter has been sent to President Tinubu to officially inform him of the governor’s demise.
Further details regarding the funeral arrangements will be released by the family and the state government.
Governor Akeredolu, aside from serving as the Governor of Ondo State, emerged as a prominent advocate for the entire Southwest region and the nation.
Described as an extraordinary leader, his unwavering dedication to the state and its people was commended and unparalleled.
Governor Akeredolu’s courage, integrity, and purposeful life in service to God Almighty were highlighted in the statement, providing some solace amidst the profound loss.
