The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has charged Nigerians to shun any fear, as there is no cause for alarm because their monies are safe in Nigerian banks, News About Nigeria reports.
The apex bank, while emphasising the stability of Nigeria’s banking sector, advised the public to continue with their regular banking activities.
The Director of Corporate Communications of the apex bank, Hakama Sidi-Ali, in a statement, explained that the reports circulating that people should not continue their transactions with Nigerian banks are false and unverified reports that did not originate from the CBN.
News About Nigeria gathered that the clarification came after a report by the CBN’s special investigator, Jim Obazee, who revealed that the former governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele, used proxies to set up two financial institutions.
Obazee’s report sparked fear among many Nigerians that the CBN may take over Titan Trust Bank (former Union Bank) and Keystone Bank.
However, the Central Bank of Nigeria, in the statement, also explained that the federal government is not going to take over any financial institutions that it oversees, as the report claims.
According to Sidi-Ali, this is because the CBN is fully equipped to carry out its statutory duty of upholding a stable financial system in Nigeria.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Nigerian banks remain safe and sound. The CBN encourages the public to continue their regular activities without being alarmed by reports that have not emanated from the CBN about the health status of Nigerian banks,” the statement partly reads.
