A first-year female student in the Department of Microbiology at Nasarawa State University (NSUK), Keffi, identified as Maikeffi Redemption Sarah, has reportedly committed suicide.
News About Nigeria learned that the 21-year-old killed herself by consuming a poisonous substance as a result of depression.
Sarah, who is said to be the fourth and last child of her family, killed herself at her off-campus lodge near the Family and Friends Hotel area, which is opposite Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
Her demise was announced by one of her male friends, who posted her death on Facebook, on Saturday.
According to him, he spoke with her on Thursday evening, and she was to come to Akwanga from Keffi to attend a wedding on Saturday (today), then go back tomorrow Sunday, only for him to hear of her sudden death.
Also, it was gathered that some of her fellow students and neighbours made efforts to neutralise the poison by giving her palm oil, but it proved abortive.
She has also been reported to have been buried today, Saturday, in Akwanga, her country home.
Responding to the tragic incident, the Nasarawa State Police Command said that it has commenced an investigation into the alleged suicide by a 21-year-old student.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, shared this information in a telephone interview with Radio Nigeria.
According to him, personnel of the Angwan Lambu Police Division in the Keffi Local Government Area of the state have been deployed to the area where the incident took place to find out the circumstances surrounding the suicide.
