The government of Lagos State confirmed the collapse of a pedestrian bridge at Alapere Ketu Estate Gate on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Friday, News About Nigeria reports.
According to the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, the pedestrian bridge collapsed in the late hours of Thursday after a truck rammed into it.
Explaining in detail, Giwa said that the incident occurred when about 12 trucks were moving in a convoy and 10 of them had successfully passed under the bridge, but the 11th one, due to overspeeding, got stuck under the bridge and caused serious damage, forcing the bridge to collapse.
He further disclosed that the accident happened at about 11 p.m. on Thursday night and was caused by the lack of patience of the truck driver because 10 trucks successfully passed through the bridge, but due to his overspeeding, his truck got stuck, leading to serious damage to the pedestrian bridge.
According to Giwa, there was no casualty in the accident and emergency responders have been able to clear the debris off the road to allow for a free flow of traffic.
Also speaking on the accident, the acting General Manager of the Lagos State Transportation Management Authority, Bakare Oki, who lamented that the accident was a result of a lack of patience, charged motorists to exercise patience while using the road to avoid such occurrences.
He also charged them to ensure that they follow road signs, especially during this yuletide season because many people are using the road.
