Ex-Benue Governor Says Federal Government Cannot Implement 2024 Budget

A former governor of Benue State, Senator Gabriel Suswam, has said that President Bola Tinubu’s administration will not be able to implement the 2024 budget it proposed because it contains a N17 trillion deficit.

News About Nigeria reported that Tinubu presented N27.5 trillion as a proposed budget for the 2024 fiscal year to members of the National Assembly on Wednesday.

Speaking on the budget proposed by the President, Suswam, while addressing 25 fellows of the Emerging Political Leaders Fellowship, explained that the budget contained the N17 trillion deficit because people without required leadership skills are in power.

Suswam also lamented that the quality of leaders in Nigeria is becoming poorer instead of going higher.

He further explained that leadership requires some intellectual prowess, and if one lacks it, it is impossible for the person to thrive in any leadership position.

Tinubu, while presenting the 2024 appropriation bill to the National Assembly, called it the ‘Budget of Renewed Hope.’

This is as the Federal Executive Council (FEC), on Monday, approved the sum of N27.5 trillion for the 2024 budget.

According to the Federal Government, it is targeting N18.32 trillion in revenue generation to fund the budget, leaving the projected budget deficit at N9.18 trillion.

The President also revealed that he projected that the economy would grow by an impressive 3.76% in the 2024 fiscal year.

The recurrent expenditure in the bill is set to gulp N9.92 trillion, while capital expenditure is N8.7 trillion.

Some Nigerians have criticised the budget, especially as the government failed to cut its expenses amid the economic hardship facing citizens.
