The United Nigeria Airlines flight has blamed its detour to Asaba rather than Abuja on bad weather, News About Nigeria reports.
The airline, in a statement signed by its Head Corporate Communications, Achilleus Chud-Uchegbu, while explaining why one of its aircraft destined for Abuja on Sunday landed in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, stated that the incident was a result of bad weather in Abuja. It maintained that the pilot had to divert the flight temporarily to Asaba for safety.
Recall that an Abuja-bound aircraft belonging to United Nigeria Airlines Limited surprisingly landed at Asaba International Airport in Delta State, South-south Nigeria on Sunday.
The 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) in Kano State, Salihu Tanko-Yakasai, who was a passenger in the aircraft, took to his X handle to narrate how the incident happened.
According to him, the flight had departed Lagos, and after an hour, upon arrival, the cabin crew had confidently announced that they were in Abuja, only for the passengers aboard to realize that they had landed in Asaba.
The airline, however, stated that the pilot was aware of the temporary diversion and had been briefed accordingly.
He noted that a wrong announcement was made by the cabin crew upon landing safely in Asaba, creating confusion among the passengers.
He further noted that the flight landed safely in Abuja following an improvement in the destination weather.
The airline apologized for the misunderstanding, stating that the airline was currently taking steps to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
