The Kano State Police Command has issued a stern warning to members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state regarding their scheduled protests on Saturday.
News About Nigeria gathered that the command, through its Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna, acting on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Mr Husaini Gumel, vowed to take decisive action against anyone violating the order.
Both political parties had mobilised their supporters to demonstrate in response to the recent controversial ruling by the Appeal Court in Abuja on the governorship election judgment.
The simultaneous protests planned by NNPP and APC raised concerns among residents about potential disruptions and hardships.
The police statement highlighted that credible information indicated the intention of the protesters to shut down the state and possibly engage in violent actions against political opponents.
The command stated that no formal notice had been received from the parties regarding the planned protests.
The warning urged all residents to exercise caution, adding that any protest or procession should adhere to the provisions of the law.
The police mentioned that people attempting to disrupt the peace would be arrested and face legal consequences.
Notably, both NNPP and APC had previously signed a peace accord before the state police command, pledging to work with security agencies for the promotion of peace. The Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Gumel, called on residents to maintain calmness and avoid unlawful gatherings, adding that joint security forces were deployed to strategic locations to safeguard peace and order throughout the state.
