The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the February 25 election, Peter Obi, on Monday, felicitated with former President Goodluck Jonathan on his 66th birthday celebration, News About Nigeria reports.

In a post shared on his X official account titled, “President Goodluck Jonathan @66 years,” Obi appreciated Jonathan for his contribution towards the growth of democracy in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large.

He also lauded the former president for being a leader who embraced a peaceful, free, fair, and credible election devoid of violence.

His post partly reads, “May I, on behalf of my family, heartily congratulate Your Excellency, Dr Goodluck Jonathan @GEJonathan as you mark your 66th birthday anniversary today. I thank God for what he has used you to do for our country, Africa, and global democracies as President and former President who continues to be a good vehicle for free, fair, transparent, and violence-free elections.”

He further appreciated Jonathan for the “huge sacrifice he made for democracy” in 2015 when he accepted defeat as an incumbent president under the then-ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Obi also added that Jonathan’s decision in 2015, when he said, “My political ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian,” shows his commitment to the people and a democracy that is primarily for them.

According to him, Jonathan’s patriotism elevated Nigeria in global democracies worldwide, notwithstanding spirited efforts to undermine it.

The former governor of Anambra State also commended Jonathan for the impact he made in Liberia during his recent mission for democracy, which in turn, birthed a transparent election and an opposition candidate as the winner.
