The Lagos State Police Command has released singer Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, and Balogun Samson, known as Sammy Larry, after they met the conditions for their bail.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the release on Friday afternoon in a brief statement, stating, “Naira Marley and Sammy Larry, having met their bail conditions, have been released.”
The two were granted bail in the sum of N20 million each, with three responsible sureties, by Justice Adeola Olatunbosun of the Lagos State Magistrates’ Court on Monday, November 6.
As part of the bail conditions, both individuals must surrender their passports and make weekly appearances at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
They were arrested in connection with an investigation into the death of singer Mohbad, following the circulation of online videos depicting assault against the late artist.
News About Nigeria reported that before their bail, Naira Marley and Sam Larry filed a fundamental rights suit to contest their continued detention in connection with the death of Mohbad.
Named as defendants in the suit filed before the Federal High Court in Lagos are the police and Lagos magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun, who ordered their remand in police custody for 21 days.
In the suit filed through their lawyer, Olalekan Ojo (SAN), Naira Marley and Sam Larry each demand N20 million in damages from the defendants.
They urged the court to declare that their continued detention ‘at the Homicide Section of the Lagos State Police Command, Panti, Yaba, Lagos State since October 4, 2023,’ violated their human rights.
They prayed for the court to order the police to release them from custody, as their 21 days had elapsed.
