Amid the impending elections in Bayelsa, Kogi, and Imo states, the Department of State Services (DSS) has voiced concern about the increasing use of inflammatory remarks by prominent figures and members of non-governmental organisations both domestically and abroad.

The DSS,  in a statement released by Peter Afunanya, its director of public relations and strategic communications, said that such remarks undermine public peace and harmony.

News About Nigeria stated that the security agency expressed grave concerns that certain figures’ use of abrasive discourse might deepen political rifts and worsen political tensions.

The DSS underlined the potential harm that these activities may do to the nation, both domestically and internationally, and encouraged people to abstain from demonising or weakening the nation by spreading incorrect or misleading information.

The institution stressed that careless discourse might incite social unrest and instability, jeopardising the security of the nation and its citizens.

Additionally, the DSS requested observance of electoral laws and engagement standards on November 11, 2023, the day of the Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa State governor’s elections.

It highlighted how critical it is to change the public conversation to one of harmony and peace since they are critical to the development and security of the country.

Election officials, the media, and members of civil society were urged by the DSS to abstain from actions that may inflame racial tensions or undermine peace and order.

The DSS advised that those on election duty, including the media and civil society, are encouraged to evade activities that will prompt racial anxieties and disrupt law and order.

The organization further stressed It is illegal to manipulate broadcast and monitoring activities while maintaining that politics should not be utilised to harm the country or any part of it.

“The law will deal decisively with individuals or groups who choose to engage in illegitimate acts or conduct hostile to public order.

“As a result, citizens are advised to be patriotic while also acknowledging that our loyalty and love for our country should transcend personal or local interests.

“Everyone is called upon to reject resentment and promote national dialogue.  We can work together to establish a stronger and more secure future for our nation,” the DSS added.
