Two Arrested Over Vigilante's Death In Lagos

A 34-year-old man, simply identified as John, lost his life after drowning in Elegushi Beach, in Lagos State, on Saturday, during a church picnic.

News About Nigeria reports that the church name withheld, located in the Ikorodu Area of Lagos State, had gone on a picnic with its youth John included.

According to the attendees of the hangout, panic had set in when they were set to leave the beach that Saturday afternoon but couldn’t locate him anywhere.

Someone who had seen him go into the water informed the members and the lifeguards and divers were alerted but efforts to locate him in the water that Saturday proved abortive.

His body was, however, recovered by lifeguards around 1 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon at the beach.

The members noted that they only discovered John was missing after a head count was done at the end of the picnic. 35 of them had showed up for the hangout and after the headcount, one person was missing and that was when they discovered John was absent.

Confirming the event, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that “the family of the victim has been contacted and the body of the victim has also been deposited at the Yaba General Hospital for an autopsy.”

He extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and called on the residents of Lagos State to be careful when at the beach and not venture far away from shore.

The PPRO also promised that security at the beach and other beaches will be heightened to avoid a reoccurrence.
