The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have issued a strike notice to the Federal Government, setting Wednesday, November 8 as the ultimatum.
News About Nigeria gathered that the notice comes in the wake of the recent attacks, abduction, and assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero and others.
During a joint briefing held on Friday, leaders of the NLC and TUC presented a six-point demand to the Federal Government.
Their demands include the immediate removal of the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, the Area Commander, and other officials implicated in the alleged complicity in the brutalisation and humiliation of Comrade Ajaero and other workers.
The incident unfolded when suspected state agents and security personnel launched an attack on Ajaero and fellow labour leaders.
They vandalised vehicles, inflicted injuries, and seized belongings such as mobile phones, money, and ATM cards from the labour leaders and others gathered at the NLC State secretariat for a planned protest regarding various labour-related issues.
The scheduled protest aimed to address concerns related to unpaid salaries, allowances, pensions, gratuities, and non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act.
The attack on Ajaero and its brutal nature have sparked widespread outrage and condemnation throughout the country.
Leaders of the NLC and TUC are scheduled to convene next Tuesday to determine an appropriate response to the assault and discuss further action.
Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, also criticises the attack on Ajaero. He expressed his shock and highlighted the incident as a reflection of the current state of affairs in the country.
