Eight crossdressers have been sentenced by a Shariah Court in Kano State to three months in jail and are to receive 10 lashes each.
News About Nigeria gathered that the suspects were arrested on Tuesday during a wedding at Kofar Waika in Gwala Local Government Area of the state.
They were sentenced after being caught wearing female clothes and dancing like women. The suspects pleaded guilty to the charge and asked that the court temper justice with mercy.
The Khade, Mallam Sani Tamim Sani Hauusawa, however, sentenced each of them to three months in jail with an option of a ₦10,000 fine each and also ordered that they should be given 10 lashes of the cane each.
The order to flog the suspects was carried out at the premises of the Hisbah Board on Tuesday in the presence of the public, and the suspects promised to behave well and not repeat the crime.
Reacting to the judgment, the Deputy Commandant General of the Hisbah Board, Dr Mujahiddin Aminuddin Abubakar, thanked the judge and promised to sustain the tempo of the fight against indecency in the state.
He also stated that the board would not allow illicit behaviour in the state.
However, Nigerians have taken the judgment with mixed feelings.
While some commend the judgment of Mallam Sani Tamim Sani Hauusawa, others said that people should be free to do whatever they like and live their lives in whichever way they please.
In response to the judgment, one Twitter user said, ‘Sharia law is the best for Nigeria.’
Another user said that 10 lashes are too small, as this is seen as an attempt to embrace a different lifestyle for them.
