A midnight fire erupted in Ladipo Plank Market, situated in the Amukoko area of Lagos State, causing extensive damage to several goods and property estimated to be worth millions of naira.
The market is located along Iganmu Road in the Orile neighbourhood.
Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), confirmed the incident. However, there were no reported casualties associated with the fire.
According to Oke-Osanyitolu, LASEMA promptly responded to distress calls and dispatched personnel to the scene of the fire.
Although no lives were lost, a substantial amount of merchandise and property was consumed by the flames.
As of now, the precise cause of the fire remains undetermined. Eyewitnesses recounted that the fire erupted at approximately 12:30 a.m. within the primary market area.
Firefighting and rescue efforts were still ongoing as of 6:00 am, with teams from LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire Service, and the Federal Fire Service working diligently to contain and extinguish the raging fire.
Additionally, rescue operations were actively continuing.
In other news, News About Nigeria reported that the Federal Government announced its plans to rebrand and expand the scope of the Federal Fire Service in the coming months.
This rebranding effort will also involve a change of name, transforming the agency into the Federal Fire and Rescue Service.
During the inauguration of 15 firefighting trucks and rapid response vehicles in Abuja on Wednesday, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, highlighted the government’s vision for the rebranded service.
The Federal Fire and Rescue Service will not only focus on fire-related emergencies but will also be actively engaged in carrying out rescue-related duties.
