Chaos erupted within the Rivers State House of Assembly as suspected political thugs set fire to the legislative building, News About Nigeria reports.

The incident unfolded following the Assembly’s decision to initiate impeachment proceedings against the Leader of the House, Hon. Edison Ehie, and the state Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara.

The arsonists carried out their act at approximately 9:45 pm, casting an atmosphere of tension around the assembly complex, which also houses the State Police Command.

According to inside sources, the Legislature had finalised plans to proceed with the impeachment process during its resumed session on Monday, driven by undisclosed issues that have plagued the state’s political landscape.

Reports suggest that in response to these developments, a group of youths invaded the assembly complex, setting it ablaze.

The fire’s outbreak necessitated the efforts of the police and the state Fire Service teams to contain and extinguish the flames.

A senior police officer in the state, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed the incident, acknowledging the efforts of law enforcement and fire service personnel. He stated, “Yes, the Rivers State House of Assembly main chamber was under attack and set on fire. It was policemen and the fire service team that helped to put out the fire.”

As of the latest reports, the premises of the assembly complex have been secured by a substantial deployment of security personnel.

Over 17 security trucks and four Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) have been stationed at the facility.

Furthermore, more than 50 Federal Security personnel have been mobilized to safeguard the complex.

In an additional development, it has been alleged that the Rivers Government House Camp Commander has been relieved of duty.
