The Federal Executive Council has approved a budget of N5.9 billion dedicated to the construction of access roads for the Abuja light rail system, News About Nigeria reports.
This announcement was made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, following the conclusion of this week’s Council meeting.
The Council meeting, which took place at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja and was chaired by President Bola Tinubu, discussed the importance of these access roads in preparing for the Abuja light rail project’s completion.
President Tinubu has set a timeline for the conclusion of the Abuja light rail project, and these access roads are a crucial component of ensuring that the railway station is easily accessible to the public.
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, noted, “Today council approved the award of contract for the construction of access roads for the Abuja light rail.
“You are aware that Mr President has given the directive that he wants to ride on the metro line. Now it will not be possible if there are no access roads to commuters in communities around.”
This approval covers LOT 4, which encompasses the communities around the airport and Abuja Hajj Camp. Creating access roads and parking facilities is vital to ensure the success of the light rail project.
Wike expressed optimism about the progress of these access roads, stating, “We believe that this access road being created and some car parks, we believe hopefully by next year most of us will be joining the metro line.”
