A joint committee of the House of Representatives has invited Nigerian musician Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, and the manager of the late Ilerioluwa Aloba, a.k.a. MohBad as part of their efforts to secure proper compensation and royalties for the late singer, News About Nigeria reports.
The joint committee, comprising members from the House Committees on Youth, Justice, and Legislative Compliance, issued a letter signed by the committee’s clerk, Yusuf Ibrahim, on Thursday, inviting Naira Marley and the late singer’s legal team to appear before it on Tuesday, October 31, 2023.
MohBad, who was a former signee of Marlian Records, passed away on the 12th of September, 2023, at the age of 27 under unclear circumstances.
Following his passing, there were allegations that Naira Marley and the Marlians had bullied him to death. However, the police have identified other suspects connected to the death.
The lawmakers have also extended an invitation to the late singer’s manager, Jiggy Adeoye, for an interactive session on Tuesday.
As stated in their letter, both Naira Marley and MohBad’s manager are required to provide guidance to the committee for further legislative action.
The House’s decision to intervene in the matter follows the adoption of a motion presented by Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos). Benson called for a review of the relevant laws governing the entertainment industry, as well as copyright laws, expressing concerns about the contracts and agreements that entertainers are compelled to sign.
The lawmakers have also assured MohBad’s family of their commitment to ensuring that the late Afrobeat singer receives proper compensation and royalties for his musical works.
