Rivers State Police have confirmed the arrest of a 400-level Petrochemical Engineering student at the University of Port Harcourt, Demain Okoligwe, on charges of murdering his girlfriend and harvesting her organs at his residence along NTA Road, Ozuoba, near Port Harcourt.
The victim, identified as Justina Otuene, was a 300-level undergraduate student studying Biochemistry at UNIPORT.
State Commissioner of Police, Emeka Nwonyi, made this disclosure while parading the suspect before the press in Port Harcourt.
He stated that the suspect allegedly butchered his girlfriend and harvested certain body parts for ritual purposes. He then concealed her decomposing corpse in his apartment for several days.
Nwonyi explained that a neighbour had become suspicious after detecting a strong stench emanating from Okoligwe’s apartment and subsequently reported it to the police.
“On Wednesday, around 3:30 pm, operatives of Ozuoba Division received a complaint from a good Samaritan of Road 20, behind NTA Ozuoba, who reported that he had perceived a very bad odour when he visited the apartment of Demain Okoligwe, a fellow tenant.
“The neighbour immediately rushed to the police station, where the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) led detectives to the scene,” Nwonyi said.
Upon arrival, the police found a lifeless body inside a ‘Ghana-must-go’ bag, concealed in the apartment.
Following investigations, Okoligwe was arrested as the prime suspect.
News About Nigeria gathered that preliminary investigations are ongoing, and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department for further scrutiny.
Commissioner Nwonyi used this incident to emphasise the importance of parents talking to their children about making careful choices in friends to avoid falling into the hands of dangerous individuals.
