Four students from Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, were reportedly raped by suspected burglars who broke into a hostel in the Abapawa area of the town, News About Nigeria gathered.
According to sources, the suspected burglars not only stole valuables but also subjected the students to sexual assault during the break-in.
The incident triggered outrage among the students and the general public, prompting a response from the state government.
The students’ protest drew the attention of the Ogun State Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, who visited the rape victims at a state hospital where they are receiving medical treatment.
The victims received the necessary support to heal from their traumatic experience at the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) at OSUTH.
In light of the situation, the university management, led by Registrar Dapo Oke, announced the suspension of the ongoing second-semester examinations. Oke emphasised the importance of remaining vigilant regarding security matters and encouraged members of the university community to promptly report any suspected security concerns to the appropriate authorities.
The state government responded by sending a delegation, led by Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele, who assured the students of adequate security measures.
A post shared on Facebook by Salako-Oyedele mentioned that the Ogun State Commissioner of Police and other stakeholders are actively involved in addressing the situation and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
However, when contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, stated that she was not yet aware of the incident and refrained from making any comments until all relevant facts were available.
