The Olowu of Owu in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Prof. Saka Matemilola, has emphasised the need for collective action to tackle the growing problem of drugs and substance abuse among Nigerian youths, News About Nigeria reports.
He described the impact of such antisocial behaviour among the youth as substantial and concerning.
Oba Matemilola made this call during a press conference held in his palace to launch the 2023 Odun Omo Olowu celebration, themed ‘A New Dawn.’
Highlighting the prevailing economic challenges in Nigeria, Oba Matemilola urged citizens to remain hopeful and adapt to the current economic realities.
He stressed the importance of living within one’s means and practising fiscal responsibility in light of the economic hardships faced by many, including the affluent.
In response to the rising issue of drug abuse among youths, the Olowu Kingdom, in collaboration with various stakeholders, has launched an extensive campaign against drug abuse.
“We have some groups that we work with, like NDLEA, Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Positive Youths, and Family Life Mission Centre, among others.
“We equally have a dedicated line that people may call to seek help. We have some of these drug addicts that have been treated and discharged. This is a noble cause that requires the support of all of us,” he said.
Oba Matemilola expressed the importance of uniting with like-minded individuals and groups to combat the menace of drug and substance abuse. He highlighted the destructive impact of drug addiction on the lives of young people and called for collective efforts to support the youth in overcoming this challenge.
