The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olukorede Keisha, has unveiled plans for a comprehensive overhaul of the asphalt layers on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.

News About Nigeria reports that this announcement comes shortly after reports that the bridge would be temporarily closed for palliative works.

Keisha confirmed that the extensive repair project will commence in late January 2024, aiming to address long-overdue maintenance concerns.

The Third Mainland Bridge, which has not seen this level of maintenance for the past 30 years, will undergo a complete overhaul of the asphalt overlay on both sides. The aged layers will be replaced with new ones designed to withstand the next decade of traffic.

“The Federal government has awarded that contract already, and preparatory works are pending when the contractor moves to the site because there are some elements of repairs that need to be imported,” Keisha stated.

She also explained the complex timeline, noting that it would take the contractor three months to import the essential repair elements.

The maintenance will be conducted in two phases, with one bound being worked on for three months and then diverting to the other bound.

After completing the first phase, traffic will be shifted back to the renovated lane. Upon completion of both phases, the Third Mainland Bridge is expected to offer a brand-new road to the countless commuters who depend on it.

The closure of the bridge for the palliative work is scheduled for October 21, 2023, to October 22, 2023, as a temporary measure to provide relief for motorists.

It is anticipated that these extensive repairs will significantly enhance the infrastructure and ensure its durability for years to come.
