Nigerian skitmaker, Adebowale Adedeyo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, and numerous other concerned Nigerians assembled at Lekki Tollgate in Lagos on Friday to commemorate the third anniversary of the shootings that transpired during the #EndSARS protests on October 20, 2020.
News About Nigeria gathered that the event was met with a substantial police presence at the Lekki Tollgate. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, along with other high-ranking police officers, were on-site.
The Lagos State Police Command had previously cautioned against any gatherings at the Lekki tollgate.
Through his X page, Mr Macaroni issued a warning to protesters not to block roads or create any disturbances affecting fellow Nigerians going about their daily routines.
He emphasised that the event is intended as a peaceful walk to honour those who lost their lives due to police brutality and that it should not be politicised.
“There are no buses at Oriental again so no one needs to gather around the bus stop. Please join the walk from anywhere you can. And if you can’t, just say a word of prayer for all those who have lost their lives to police brutality.
“Again, this is a peaceful walk to honor all those who have fallen. There should be no blocking of road or any form of disturbance to other Nigerians going about their daily activities.
“Please do not dishonor all those who have died by making this peaceful walk about political differences. The #Endsars movement is bigger than any one of us. We walk, say our prayers and go back home. God bless everyone,” he tweeted.
On Thursday, both Mr Macaroni and Falz, another activist, shared a flyer on their social media platforms outlining the schedule for the event.
The flyer indicated that the walk would commence at 10 am, with buses available to transport people from Oriental, Lagos.
In his post, Falz stated, “Tomorrow, we remember our fallen heroes. Three years ago, they were unjustly killed. We will never ever forget.”
Mr Macaroni, via Instagram, noted that the peaceful walk is intended to honour not only those affected on October 20, 2020 but all victims of police brutality in Nigeria.
