FG Explains Samoa Agreement, Says It Will Benefit Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Ola Olukoyede as the new Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

News About Nigeria gathered that the decision came after the resignation of the suspended Executive Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa.

The announcement was made in a statement by presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, who cited the powers vested in President Tinubu under section 2 (3) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act, 2004. According to the Act, ‘the Chairman and members of the Commission, other than ex-officio members, shall be appointed by the President’.

Ola Olukoyede, a legal professional with over 22 years of experience, has an extensive background in regulatory compliance consulting, fraud management, and corporate intelligence.

Notably, he also possesses a comprehensive understanding of the operations of the EFCC, having previously served as Chief of Staff to the Executive Chairman from 2016 to 2018 and as Secretary to the Commission from 2018 to 2023.

The appointment of Olukoyede aligns with the statutory requirements for the position of Chairman of the EFCC, as per Ngelale’s statement.

Additionally, President Tinubu has approved the appointment of Muhammad Hassan Hammajoda as the Secretary of the anti-graft Commission.

His term is initially set for five years, pending Senate confirmation. Hammajoda, a public administrator, brings a wealth of experience in public finance management.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Maiduguri and a Masters in Business Administration from the same institution.

Hammajoda’s career trajectory includes time as a lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, and a successful transition into the banking sector, with stints at the defunct Allied Bank and Standard Trust Bank.

President Bola Tinubu has charged the new leadership of the EFCC with the responsibility of justifying the confidence placed in them for this vital national assignment.
