Daniel Bwala, an ally to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized President Bola Tinubu for appointing Ola Olukayode as the new chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
News About Nigeria recalls that President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, announced the appointment of Mr Olukayode as the new chairman of the anti-graft agency. Mr Olukayode is the first Southerner to head the agency and also the first civilian to hold the position.
However, faulting the appointment of Mr Olukayode in a tweet on Thursday, Mr Bwala described his appointment as unlawful and illegal.
According to him, Mr Olukayode’s appointment ran foul of section 2 of the EFCC Act.
“The appointment of Olukayode as EFCC Chairman by PBAT is unlawful and illegal. It runs foul of the provisions of Section 2 of the EFCC ACT…,” the statement read in part.
Mr Bwala argued that the new EFCC chairman was not fit to hold the office because he had never served in any law enforcement agency, among other things.
He explained that Olukayode, before his appointment, was only a private legal practitioner that has never worked or belonged to any security or law enforcement agency as a member.
His comment comes as Nigerians continue to accuse President Bola Tinubu of being nepotistic with his appointments. There are claims that President Tinubu has continued to favour the South West region in his appointments.
However, many Nigerians have continued to ask the lawmakers to kick against the appointment as Tinubu sends his name to the Nigerian Senate for confirmation.
