The Social Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP has asked the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led government to immediately drop all charges brought against the publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore.
Making this call in a tweet via its official X handle on Wednesday, the organization alleged that the refusal of the federal government to release the passport of the AAC presidential candidate was a travesty that must stop.
“The Tinubu administration must immediately drop the ridiculous and bogus ‘treason’ charges against journalist Omoyele Sowore and return his international passport, which stem from the peaceful exercise of his human rights. This travesty must stop,” a tweet by SERAP read.
News About Nigeria recalls that Mr Sowore in 2019, was detained by Nigerian security personnel.
Sowore, the publisher of Sahara Reporters was arrested in August 2019 for organizing the ‘Revolution Now’ protest.
Mr Sowore was reportedly arrested by men of the State Security Services on the eve of the planned protest.
Among a host of other problems, from incompetence to corruption, Sowore has stated that one reason Nigeria needs revolution is because the previous elections were not credible.
However, the Nigerian government justified Sowore’s arrest by arguing that the former presidential candidate committed treason by trying to incite a revolution against a democratically elected government.
Mr Sowore was recently seen in a now-viral video pleading with the court to dismiss the case brought against him by the previous administration and requesting the court to order the Tinubu administration to return his passport so he could reunite with his family.
