The Central Bank of Nigeria’s acting Governor, Dr. Olayemi Cardoso, and four nominees for the roles of CBN Deputy Governors will be screened by the Senate today (Tuesday) for confirmation into a substantive capacity to oversee the apex bank’s operations for the next five years.
News About Nigeria reports that the Red Chamber has set Tuesday, October 3, 2023, as the date for the vetting of two extra ministerial nominations made by President Bola Tinubu as it returns from its two-month annual holiday.
This was announced in a statement released on Monday night by the Senate Leader’s media office, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele.
The President appointed Dr. Jamila Ibrahim and Ayodele Olawande to the positions of Minister of Youths and Minister of State for Youths, respectively, while the National Assembly was on recess.
In addition, Tinubu gave his approval for Cardoso’s nomination to be the new governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, pending Senate confirmation.
Cardoso assumed position as CBN governor last week in an acting capacity while he awaited the Senate’s review and anticipated confirmation.
“Dr. Cardoso will be screened alongside four deputy governors: namely Mrs. Emem Nnana Usoro, Mr. Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo, Mr. Philip Ikeazor, and Dr. Bala M. Bello,” the statement read
“Besides, the Senate has scheduled to screen the ministerial nominees – Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim and Mr. Ayodele Olawande, respectively designated as Minister of Youth and Minister of State for Youth on October 3.”
Meanwhile, the Senate also pledged not to disappoint Nigerians as regards the appropriation of the 2024 budget.
Speaking on the agenda of the Red Chamber ahead of its resumption, the Senate spokesperson, Yemi Adaramodu, emphasised that the revitalisation of the economy was top of its priorities.
