The Delta House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging the State Government to take decisive measures against the increasing cases of drug abuse and prostitution in the state.
News About Nigeria gathered that the resolution was adopted following a motion presented by Bridget Anyafulu, representing the people of Oshimili South, during a plenary session in Asaba.
Anyafulu expressed her concern over the rising instances of open sex trade and the use of illicit drugs, particularly among youths in the state, with a main focus on Asaba and its environs.
She emphasized that such illegal activities set a bad example for younger persons in the state and demanded urgent intervention.
”Open sex trade and use of illicit drug is not a good example for our children. The situation is worrisome considering the fact that both issues are illegal,” she said.
Anyafulu continued, “The twin evils of drug abuse and sex trade pose a significant threat to the lives of our young people and the broader society. They undermine the physical, mental, and social well-being of our youth, jeopardizing the state’s development, peace, and security.”
Oboro Preyor, representing Bomadi, also voiced his concerns about the negative impact of escalating drug abuse and prostitution, emphasizing the need for immediate action.
He called for the rehabilitation of youths addicted to drugs and the creation of opportunities for engaging them in productive activities.
The lawmakers unanimously adopted the motion through a voice vote, with the Speaker Dennis Guwor presiding.
Additionally, they called for the cooperation of law enforcement agencies to apprehend and prosecute illicit drug dealers and commercial sex workers in accordance with the law to curb the growing trend.
