Sao Tome and Principe have withdrawn from their qualifier against Nigeria’s Super Falcons for the 2023 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2024).
News About Nigeria understands that the decision has given Nigeria’s team an automatic ticket into the second round of the qualifiers.
The initial fixture had scheduled the Super Falcons to face Sao Tome and Principe in the first leg of the first-round qualifying match.
However, the Sao Tome and Principe Football Association officially communicated their withdrawal from the competition to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Following the withdrawal, the Super Falcons will now shift their focus to the second round of the qualifiers which is yet to be determined.
Their next opponent will be announced after the match between Cape Verde and Liberia. Randy Waldrum girls will face the winner of the fixture.
Meanwhile, the upcoming fixture will not happen until November 27 and December 5, 2023, as the Super Falcons aim to secure their place ahead of the continental tournament.
The winner of the upcoming second-round fixture will earn the opportunity to compete in the 2024 women’s Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to be hosted by Morocco.
Recall that the Super Falcons have a rich record in the women’s football competition, having consistently represented Nigeria in every edition of the tournament.
In the last edition of WAFCON hosted by the same country (Morocco), the Super Falcons finished in fourth place. They have also won the title three times in the last decade: 2014, 2016, and 2018 editions.
