Chinedu Ani Emmanuel, widely known as Nedu Wazobia, a popular On-Air Personality (OAP), has shared his perspective on the Nigerian music industry in the wake of the sudden death of rising star Mohbad.
The fast-rising Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, known as Mohbad, passed away at the age of 27 on Tuesday, leaving fans and the music industry in shock.
In a trending video on social media, Nedu Wazobia expressed his thoughts on the Nigerian music scene, saying that the music industry is dark.
Nedu commented, “This music industry is very, very dark. I have been in the industry for over 13 years. Everybody wants to become music artistes; they want to be famous and rich, but fame in the industry doesn’t go beyond two years.”
News About Nigeria reports that he acknowledged that there are exceptions, with some artistes enjoying lasting careers of up to 20 years, earning them the title of ‘legends’.
Nedu emphasised that popularity can lead to people celebrating artistes, but the sad reality is that after an artist’s passing, many people who may have overlooked them in life will suddenly show their support, often with tributes and ‘RIP’ posts.
He concluded by highlighting the importance of pursuing one’s passion for music or any other endeavour for personal fulfilment rather than seeking external validation.
“It’s when you are popular that people will come around you and be celebrating you. But you see the one wey nobody go ever forget na RIP, rest in peace, including those who forgot to post your pictures on your birthday will never forget to post it for RIP. But las las for this live don’t do things for self appraisers, do them because you find fulfilment in doing it (sic).
“Now see our Wonderful brother Mohbad. Did you know that the EP he dropped and nobody downloaded, but after his death the song has become top three on Naija Apple Play. May God rest his soul.”
