Ahead of the November 11 gubernatorial poll in Imo State, the Labour Party (LP) has officially inaugurated a 481-member campaign council, News About Nigeria reports.
The council is tasked with strategizing and spearheading the party’s campaign efforts to secure victory in the upcoming election.
During the inauguration ceremony held in Owerri, the state chairman of the Labour Party, Callistus Ihejiagwa, disclosed the importance of the council’s role in the “fierce urgency” to rescue Imo State from its current challenges.
He emphasized that the council members had become the torchbearers for LP, its gubernatorial candidate, Sen. Athan Achonu, and Peter Obi, throughout their local communities.
“This is a call to duty, service, and selfless sacrifice for the good of Imo,” Ihejiagwa said, urging the council to approach their responsibilities with pride, dignity, and selflessness, recognizing that they had been anointed by God to bring liberation to Imo State.
Highlighting the nature of the task at hand, Ihejiagwa cautioned, “If we disappoint the people, they will not forgive us. Our children will not forgive us.”
He also acknowledged the impact of insecurity in the state, which had compelled many to hold traditional events outside Imo for fear of potential attacks.
Addressing perceptions of LP’s resources and structure, he stated that those with big cars and structures were often associated with corruption. He emphasized the party’s commitment to eradicating corruption and the hunger for a new Imo and Nigeria.
In his remarks, the Director-General of the council, Chime Nzeribe, stressed the importance of the upcoming election as a struggle to “emancipate Igboland, not only Imo.”
Nzeribe called on the council to take their polling booths seriously and ensure that every vote for the party’s candidate counted.
The Chairman of the occasion, Nicholas Ndudu, expressed confidence in LP as the party of the future and affirmed its commitment to grassroots mobilization and success. He praised the council members for their selection and their potential to lead the party to victory.
The Chairman of the council, Tochukwu Okere, in his acceptance speech, pledged to secure victory for Achonu and the party.
He called on his campaign members to unite and conduct an aggressive campaign, emphasizing that victory in all polling booths, wards, and the state as a whole, would be their ultimate goal.
