The National Assembly Elections Petitions Tribunal in Jos, Plateau, has nullified the election victory of Dachung Bagos, a member of the House of Representatives from the Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency, News About Nigeria reports.
Bagos had been elected as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the House of Assembly poll held on February 25.
The tribunal’s ruling came as a shock to many when it declared Ajang Alfred, the Labour Party candidate, as the legitimate winner of the election.
This decision was made on Tuesday, September 12, based on the grounds that Bagos was not validly nominated by the PDP to contest the poll.
Ajang Alfred, now declared the rightful winner, expressed his gratitude for the tribunal’s decision, saying, “I believe in the rule of law, and this verdict validates the democratic process. I am prepared to serve the people to the best of my ability.”
This decision marked the third instance in Plateau where the tribunal nullified the election of PDP candidates. Notably, Senator Napoleon Bali representing Plateau South, and Peter Gyengdeng representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency faced similar outcomes.
In other news, the National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Umuahia, Abia state, rejected the petitions filed by Mao Ohuabunwa of the Peoples Democratic Party and Nnamdi Iro-Orji of the Labour Party.
The petitioners had sought to invalidate Senator Orji Kalu’s win in the February 25 election. Consequently, the tribunal sustained Senator Kalu’s triumph as the representative of the Abia-North Senatorial district in the last election.
