Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has been named as the new captain of the German national football team, taking over from the injured goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, News About Nigeria gathered.
The decision was officially announced by Germany’s head coach, Hansi Flick, in anticipation of the team’s upcoming friendlies against Japan and France.
During a press conference, Flick explained the rationale behind the player’s selection, saying, “We have made a change in the captaincy. We carefully considered what would be best for the team. Typically, with the national team, the player with the most international matches takes on the captain’s role.
“I have decided to entrust Ilkay with the captain’s armband. Alongside Joshua Kimmich, they will now form our leadership duo. I’m genuinely pleased that both of them have embraced this responsibility, providing us with a fresh source of energy that we can harness effectively.”
Gundogan’s recent contributions to Manchester City’s treble last season undoubtedly contributed to his selection.
In his acceptance speech, the Barcelona midfielder said, “It is an honor for me to lead this young team as captain. My experience with City last year shows that I am capable of handling this responsibility.”
Gundogan played a pivotal role in the 2022/23 season when Manchester City won the Champions League, the English Premier League and FA Cup.
He moved to Barcelona last summer on a free transfer, signing a two-year deal, with a possible 12 months extension. The 32-year-old is dubbed to earn just over £165,000-per-week, and around £7.7 million or €9 million per season at the Spanish club.
