Ayra Starr has expressed disappointment at the organisers of the 2023 Headies Award despite bagging ‘Best Female Artiste’ of the year.
However, News About Nigeria understands the award wasn’t presented to her on stage. This led to her outburst, expressing disappointment with the organizers of the event for lack of recognition on stage for winning the award.
Venting her annoyance on X, she wrote, “I will never be grateful for winning a category that wasn’t even deemed fit to be announced on stage!”
Starr indicated how hard she and other Nigerian female singers work to be at the top and believe they deserve better appreciation than the treatment they get.
“Best female artist na beans? We work hard, every single one of us! I’ve seen Tiwa record 4 hit songs in the same night, Tems breaths and lives for music, we didn’t deserve such nonchalance! Nigeria, you didn’t raise me to settle for less.”
The Headies Award is an annual music award show for Nigerian artists since 2006, to recognize outstanding achievements in the Nigerian music industry.
The award is presented by Smooth Promotions and was created by Ayo Animashaun.
This year’s edition took place at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta Georgia, USA and had in attendance stakeholders in the African music industry who gathered to celebrate Nigerian music.
Ayra Starr’s comments have since sparked reactions on social media with many fans agreeing with her while others had differing opinions.
Meanwhile, the organizers of the event are yet to respond to Ayra Starr’s comments.
