The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has given Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, a three-day ultimatum to accept a pay cut and renew his contract or quit his post, News About Nigeria reports.
The ultimatum was issued by the NFF’s technical committee after Peseiro’s previous contract expired at the end of July 2023.
According to the NFF’s technical committee, Peseiro’s $70,000 monthly salary is too high for the organization to sustain. The committee has stated that if Peseiro fails to make a decision within three days, he will bid farewell to his job.
Peseiro has expressed his desire to lead the Super Eagles to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cote d’Ivoire. However, he is not willing to accept a reduction in his salary.
The NFF’s decision has been met with mixed reactions from football fans and analysts. Some have criticized the organization for not valuing its coaches and players enough, while others have praised it for taking steps to reduce costs and streamline operations.
Meanwhile, in a recent interview with MSN, a sports analyst said, “It’s a tough call for both parties. On one hand, Peseiro has done a good job with the Super Eagles and deserves to be compensated accordingly.
“On the other hand, the NFF needs to be financially responsible and ensure that it can sustain its operations in the long run,” the analyst added
However, it remains to be seen whether Peseiro will accept the pay cut and continue as head coach of the Super Eagles or whether he will resign from his post.
