Popular Nigerian entertainment journalist and podcaster, Joey Akan, has openly criticized rising artist, Spyro, for what he perceives as hypocrisy in the music industry, News About Nigeria gathered.

Spyro, known for promoting gospel themes in his music, recently criticized Shallipopi’s viral song “Elon Musk,” associating it with Satanism and its potential influence on youth involved in internet fraud.

Joey Akan took to X to express his disapproval of Spyro’s comments, highlighting what he views as a contradiction in the artist’s actions.

While Spyro portrays himself as a representative of Christ in the secular entertainment world, Akan pointed out that he collaborates with worldly artists and has even signed with a secular label.

He further questioned Spyro’s choice to feature secular artists like Tiwa Savage and Iyanya on his songs instead of collaborating with fellow faith-based colleagues.

In his post on X, Akan wrote, “This boy Spyro received his biggest-ever song by working with worldly-adjacent artists. He chose Tiwa Savage for a collaboration over his faith-based colleagues.

“Chioma Jesus and Dunsin Onyekan lost out on ‘Who’s your guy,’ remix. He’s also signed to a worldly label and performs at worldly events, including an upcoming activation for Trophy, an alcoholic brand that caters to nightlife and winebibers.

“But he never fails to ceaselessly attack his colleagues, their professional output, and their themes of escapism and realism. Add that to a collaboration with DJ Neptune and Iyanya, two ‘worldly’ music stalwarts. I call it hypocrisy. Promoting Jesus, but dining in the lucrative altars of mammon,” he added.

Joey Akan’s criticism of Spyro has garnered reactions on social media, with some supporting his stance and others suggesting that the attention might only fuel Spyro’s desired publicity.
